Hardening for ICS

This workshop provides practical, IEC 62443-aligned training on hardening IT and industrial control systems against modern cyber threats. It is designed to help participants move from theory to hands-on application, with a strong focus on reducing attack surfaces and improving the security of real-world environments.

Hardening is one of the key ways to protect systems and environments against cyber attacks, whether from remote or insider threats. As connectivity between IT and industrial environments continues to increase for business data exchange, remote access, and integration between industrial systems, these environments are exposed to a growing number of risks. As a result, additional protective measures are needed. Alongside patching and other controls, hardening is an important way to reduce risk, but it requires a well-thought-out approach and the right actions to be taken.

Hardening is not only part of security best practices, but is also reflected in policies and standards. For that reason, the workshop highlights relevant links and references to IEC 62443.

This training gives participants insight into the different aspects of a hardening process: what hardening involves, how to perform it, why specific settings matter, and which components should be hardened to reduce potential attack vectors. The potential consequences of hardening measures are also explained. Participants are guided through the creation of a basic hardening script and supporting system policies to help them apply similar measures in their own environments. The workshop also explains the potential pitfalls of hardening standalone and domain-joined systems.

The training covers operating systems such as Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server, which are commonly used to provide human-machine interfaces for operators. It also addresses Linux elements, network component security, and industrial control system devices. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to verify hardening by using common security tools and which steps to take to harden systems and environments effectively.

Through real-world, scenario-based exercises, attendees gain a solid understanding of what can and should be done to better protect industrial environments.
